Ever since Sony Worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that PlayStation 5 is happening while Microsoft Xbox president Phil Spencer announced that they will launch the next-gen Xbox - Xbox Two - the Internet is flooded with rumors and speculations relating to their specs and launch dates.
Although none of the two consoles will be happening any time soon and fans would have to wait for another 4-5 years to get hold of the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox, some industry experts are of the view that the upcoming consoles will come without disk drives. They also speculate that PS5 and Xbox Two may well be the last PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Crossmap reported.
In fact, during an interview with The Guardian's "Changing Media Summit" organized last year in London, Emmett Shear, an executive at the streaming service Twitch, discussed the way in which the life span of gaming consoles may be under threat vis-à-vis the consumer market.
There are reports that both Sony and Microsoft are like to change the form of their upcoming gaming consoles. Neither PlayStation 5 nor Xbox 2 are expected before 2019-2020, as Sony and Microsoft require enough time to work on their respective VR technologies. While Microsoft may incorporate its HoloLens into Xbox Two, Sony will possibly add the company's Project Morpheus to PlayStation 5.
According to some experts, PlayStation 5 is unlikely to be a complete gaming console. They speculate that it may well be a streaming device, featuring state-of-the-art 4k graphics as well as superior hardware, including support for Virtual Reality (VR).
It is likely that the PlayStation 5 will be available in two models, N4BB reported. Similar to the present day smartphones, even console gamers will henceforth be offered options of two devices, the report stated, adding that while one device may be a full-fledged console supporting VR, while the other would be similar to a streaming device. At the same time, one model could be more affordable than the other.
Earlier, there were rumors hinting that the PS5 would be smaller compared to the PS4 and capable of streaming games on TV sets. In addition, there are rumors that the next-gen gaming console from the Japanese tech giant may use a potent AMD chipset with a view to provide the users the best possible gaming experience.
