Written by Nia Vardalos and directed by Kirk Jones, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" is set to hit theaters on March 25. With new characters and most of the original characters returning, the comedy sequel came more than a decade after the original film enjoyed box-office success.
On March 15, Tuesday, Tom Hanks and wife Rita Wilson attended the premiere of the film at the AMC Loews Lincoln Square in New York. The couple produced both the original film released in 2002 and the sequel.
Wilson is also part of the cast in the sequel, still starring Vardalos and John Corbett as husband and wife Ian Miller and Toula Portokolas-Miller. Hanks' wife plays Anna, the wife of George (John Stamos).
In the closing credit, Wilson performs a song titled "Even More Mine," which she co-wrote with Darrell Brown and Nathan Chapman.
Currently, Wilson plays Evie Michaels in "Girls." She is also filming "Brother in Laws," which stars Bill Pullman, Gillian Jacobs and Rachael Harris.
According to Hanks, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" contrasts humor with challenges that viewers can relate to, such as keeping the romance alive in a faithful relationship. He said romantic comedy films will not work unless they "accurately reflect behavior that people recognize."
"That's what Nia and John's characters go through," Variety quoted Hanks as saying. "It's hilarious, but at the same time it's a pain."
Known for her role as Maya Decker in "American Odyssey," Elena Kampouris plays Paris Miller, the daughter of Ian Miller and Toula Portokolas-Miller. The actress was born in New York to a Greek father and a French-American mother.
Among the relatives of Toula Portokolas-Miller featured in the sequel are Angelo (Joey Fatone), Nikki (Gia Carides), Taki (Gerry Mendicino) and Voula (Andrea Martin). "Cougar Town" alum Andy Torres also reprises his role as Ian Miller's best friend, Mike.
During the premiere of the sequel, Hanks also talked about falling in love at first sight with Wilson. He saw her for the first time when she guest-starred on "The Brady Bunch" as a cheerleader in 1972.
"I was actually at a friend of mine's house when it aired," People quoted Hanks as saying. "And I remember thinking, 'That girl's cute.'"
