Following its latest success at the Academy Awards, the Hollywood thriller film "The Revenant" starring acclaimed actor Leonardo DiCaprio hit Chinese theaters on Friday, China.org reported.
The movie made a strong debut as China "has arranged for 38.22 percent of all film screenings nationwide" for the award-winning film.
"The Revenant," helmed by Mexican veteran filmmaker Alejandro G. Inarritu, topped all other films, which include "Eddie the Eagle" of the 20th Century Fox.
As of Friday, 2 p.m., the film has grossed 38 million yuan and is expected to reach the 300-million-yuan mark for its opening weekend.
"The Revenant" follows the story of a 19th-century frontiersman who was abandoned by his colleagues in the Native American territory. The main character, played by DiCaprio, goes on an extreme journey as he seeks revenge.
The film also stars Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Pouter. It is inspired by the experiences of fur trapper Hugh Glass who lived in the 1820s, and is based on a novel penned by Michael Punke.
"The Revenant," since its premiere, has earned positive reviews from film critics around the globe. It has also won three Oscars: Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Actor.
The film made buzz recently as it gave DiCaprio his first Oscar win. According to Bai Jie, an executive from Alpha Pictures and the Chinese producer of the film, "The Revenant" is more than just a film but also a "brand new film viewing experience," China.org wrote.
The producer also confirmed that DiCaprio will grace the film's promotional event this Sunday in Beijing. The visit will serve as the Hollywood A-lister's first trip to China to promote a film project. The event will provide an opportune time for the fans to interact with DiCaprio.
Since its release in January, "The Revenant" has already grossed $444 million.
