Data showed on Friday reveals that "Descendants of the Sun" has continued to reach new heights and may even dethrone MBC's "Moon Embracing the Sun" spot.
"Descendants of the Sun" episode 10 raked in 36.4 viewer percentage in Seoul alone, and garnered 31.6 percent of viewers nationwide. The drama that stars actor Song Joong-ki and actress Song Hye-kyo even surpassed the popularity of Jun Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun's drama "My Love from the Star."
"Descendants of the Sun" is the first Korean drama that was aired in two countries simultaneously - South Korea and China. The drama, which was aired on Feb. 24, is also the first drama to have been pre-produced before airing, which is why adjusting plots and characters real-time will be difficult for the producers to apply. The said situation is also the same reason why "Descendants of the Sun" will be impossible to extend.
The production budget of "Descendants of the Sun" is an estimated 13 billion won ($10.5 million), but because the drama has been well received by many, the cost invested by producers was repossessed instantly. In China alone, the rights to broadcast one episode of "Descendants of the Sun" costs over $222,000 or 260 million won. To think that the drama's publication rights has already been sold to 32 countries, including Australia, Thailand, Japan, producers are now definitely raking million or billions.
Meanwhile, on "Descendants of the Sun's" previous episode, Dr. Kang Mo-yeon and Capt. Yoo Si-jin tried saving an Uruk girl that was held captive in a shabby building. Yoo orders Kang to just wait in the car and to leave the captain if he does not return in five minutes; however, instead of leaving, Kang drives into the dilapidated building and saves Yoo. Later on, Kang and medic Yun Myeong-ju operated a South Korean power plant owner in Uruk, in which, Yun contracts a potentially deadly virus called M3.
In the next episode of "Descendants of the Sun," Kang will be abducted by an unidentified gang. The gang will break into the South Korean Special Forces' barracks where volunteer doctors, including Kang, are stationed.
