"Descendants of the Sun" broke another record when Episode 11 aired on Wednesday. The new viewer record of 40.9 percent was logged because of the cliffhanger toward the end of the episode.
That was when Seo Dae Yong, played by Jin Goo, stares at the dog tags and uniform left by Yoo Si Jin, played by Song Joong-ki. The worried look on Seo’s face was preceded by Yoo leaving his unit and risking his life to save Kang Mo Yeon, played by Song Hye Kyo, from kidnappers, reported Inquisitr.
The 40.9 percent, was for the metropolitan area in South Korea, while nationwide, the viewership for the March 30 episode was 38.3 percent, Soompi cited Nielsen Korea. During the first seven minutes of Episode 11, “Descendants of the Sun” registered more than 30 percent rating which increased further as the episode ended.
If the blockbuster show will have a nationwide rating of 40 percent, it would break the record of “Moon Embracing the Sun” set in 2012. The 18th episode of “Moon Embracing the Sun” almost reached 50 percent in the metropolitan area.
Inquistr noted that “Descendants of the Sun” was bound to really enjoy high ratings because of its genre, a military drama, which has not been seen sometime in South Korean television. But it said the military drama would likely not break “Moon’s” record even when the last four episodes air on April 6, 7, 14 and 15.
Soompi added that until the drama airs the 16th episode on April 15, it would likely continue enjoying high viewership and would unlikely decrease in rating. Soompi explained, “As intense as the cliffhanger is at the end of the 11th episode, it heightens the anticipation for the next episode, and the next episode will be sure to bring in high ratings as well.”
