It was 2 years ago when fans saw the season finale episode of "Sherlock" season 3. Although fans expected that the network and executive producers will renew "Sherlock" for another season, what they did not expect is for it to be released 3 years later. Perhaps, the special episode of "Sherlock," which was aired earlier this year, can be considered as a statement that the show will certainly be back on the small screen.
The reason behind the delay of "Sherlock" season 4's production, according to rumors, could be because its lead star Benedict Cumberbatch was working for Marvel in filming his debut superhero movie, "Doctor Strange." Recently, the movie's director Scott Derrickson tweeted that it was a perfect timing for Sherlock's team to begin its production, because "Doctor Strange's" filming has just been completed.

According to rumors, "Sherlock" season 4 might introduce new characters to the show that are highly possible to be Holme's new antagonists, which is to further increase the show's level of excitement. The fourth season may also open-up new storylines that would help expand the season itself.
On the other hand, the writer-producer of the show may have provided a clue about what fans should expect in the anticipated season 4. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Steven Moffat said that "Sherlock" season 4 will be different from the previous seasons. He stated that the fourth season is going to be filled with a lot of humors, but it will also be dark in some ways. This season will be about consequences, he added.
"Sherlock" season 4 was reportedly set to premiere in the first quarter of 2017.
