KBS, the South Korean broadcasting giant which airs the blockbuster “Descendants of the Sun,” has started to accept pre-orders for handmade cookies named after the 16-episode Korean drama.
Yonhap reported that there are five kinds, although the image it released showed only four. Three of the four “Descendants of the Sun”-themed cookies are heart-shaped and one is square. The first one shows four arms linked together by a red heart in the middle. The second is all red with a small white heart on the upper right corner and white lines in the middle resembling an ECG reading.
The third is an inverted heart with a design that looks like an army cap similar to what Song Joong-ki wears as Army Captain Yoo Si Jin and a pair of sunglasses. Finally, the fourth is a square cookie with a red cross in the middle to represent Song Hye Kyo who is surgeon Kang Mo Yeon.
The cookies could be ordered at Gmarket, Auction, 11ST and Interpark, which are shopping websites in South Korea. KBS is accepting orders from outside the country and will begin shipment on April 14 when Episode 16, the final episode, airs.
At 11ST, the “Descendants of the Sun” cookie set sells for 18,000 won or $16.55.
At Gmarket, a search for the cookies yields zero results, but the e-commerce site showed a lot of other “Descendants of the Sun” merchandise besides the soundtrack which sells for 12,500 won ($11.02).
There is a wool doll that sells for 46,000 won ($40.53), photo cards and autographs for 16,200 won ($14.28), women’s elevator sneakers for 26,700 won ($23.53), Kang Mo Yeon shirts and blouse for 29,800 won ($26.26) and combat wear like Song Joong-ki’s uniform for 52,900 won ($46.61).
Clearly, it is not just KBS or iQiyi that is laughing its way to the bank with the unexpected success of the Korean drama. However, it is not just the broadcasters who are having fund, even the actors did when they had a reunion party at Gangnam.
