Song Joong Ki's new look will surprise fans big time, as the actor just revealed his plans to shave his head for a new role in his next movie project.
The 30-year-old actor, best known for his role as Captain Yoo Si Jin in "Descendants of the Sun," recently kicked off his Asian tour by holding attending his fifth fan meeting in Seoul, which was attended by around 4,000 viewers, Asia Times has learned.
Amid the fan meeting, Song opened up about his future projects now that the mega-hit series has recently wrapped up. It has been learned that the actor's next project will be a historical war based movie with "Veteran" film director Ryoo Seung-Wan at the helm.
"I spend my time these days reading the script for my project... I am planning on shaving my head for the movie," Soompi quoted the actor as saying during the fan meeting event at Kyung Hee University's Grand Peace Hall on April 17, Sunday.
Song is collaborating with top-notch actor Hwang Jung-min and "Oh My Venus'" So Ji Sub in the upcoming "Gunhamdo" aka "Battleship Island" film. It is based on the real-life events of many Joseon individuals, who was drafted into forced labor on Hashima Island amid the World War II.
Set in the Japanese colonial era, the film highlights the concealed history of the island and the countless lost lives of the South Korean laborers. It also delineates the story of the American's Office of Strategic Services (OSS) agents and Korean independence fighters, who were on a mission to evacuate a key Korean figure from the said remote island lying in the southern Japan's sea.
According to earlier reports, Song will be playing the role of Park Moo-Young, an independence fighter, who sneaks onto the island to protect a member of the Korean independence group. While the 38-year-old actor So will take on the part of Choi Chil Sung, a top fighter in Kyungsung (old name of Seoul), who is seemingly stir up a few incidents while aboard the said island.
The most-acclaimed actor Hwang will then assume the part of Lee Kang-Ok, a bandmaster at Kyungsung Hotel and a loving father who goes to any lengths just to protect his daughter. He is said to be one of the incalculable Koreans who were drafted into the "Battleship Island" by force.
With the film director currently eyeing early 2017 release date window, it has been learned that the cast and crew members will be in full-blown production starting May. "Gunhamdo," roughly translate to "Battleship Island," marks the first time for the three star-studded actors - Song, Hwang, and So, to work together in one historical film.
