Like a lot of youth confused and not knowing how to handle a breakup, 23-year-old Zhang planned to commit suicide after his girlfriend broke up with him.
Fortunately, in an age of selfie and extreme posting, even suicide plans are now being posted as a "status" on social media sites, which is what Zhang did. Zhang posted a photo of blood flowing from his slashed wrist while standing outside the house of his ex-girlfriend in Shangqiu, Henan Province.
As a result, hundreds of Chinese netizens posted on a chat forum, where Zhang posted his suicide plans, to dissuade the heartbroken young man from taking his own life, reported The South China Morning Post. Outside the hundreds of messages on the online forum, the two administrators of the forum called him and they talked over the phone which convinced Zhang not to push through.
The administrators accompanied Zhang to his former girlfriend’s house and later to a hospital to treat his wrist slash wound. After realizing the folly of his actions, Zhang said he would not repeat another attempt on his own life and thanked all those who sent him messages of encouragement even if they are strangers.
However, according to the World Health Organization, suicide is more common among Chinese women than men. It is the only country in the world where female suicide outnumber male suicides, which would likely be explained by the second-class status of women in Chinese society in general.
Globally, WHO estimated the number of people committing suicide to 800,000 people, but around 75 percent are reported in low- and middle-income nations in 2012.
