John Romero, one of the iconic names in creating the Doom video game, has pulled their Kickstarter campaign for the new Blackroom FPS game because the developers want to provide a working demo first.
The Kickstarter campaign went live on Monday, but Romero decided to pull the plug on the crowdfunding campaign. Romero and fellow Night Work Games founder Adrian Carmack told their backers that they want to finish working on a demo first so that they will be complying with Kickstarter policies.
Before the campaign was cut off, there were more than 2,200 backers that have pledged more than $130,000. The sheer amount of funding and backers they already had is impressive considering that all they presented were concept art shots of the Blackroom game.
Blackroom is supposed to be a fast-paced first-person shooter that is set in holographic worlds, according to Develop. This means that the development team to input any type of weapons from any setting or era.
For instance, they could introduce laser weapons as well as revolvers from the old west. The holographic world would also mean that any setting would also be available.
Romero told Develop that people have been commenting that they wanted to see some gameplay. It's not that the idea of the whole game was not good, but the backers wanted to see how it would play out.
In addition, the gameplay demo would also help in garnering more attention from potential backers and such. Blackroom needed $700,000 in funding to reach their goal, Venture Beat reported.
Romero and Carmack are known for helping create Doom, which is one of the most influential FPS games of all time. The game is considered to have a large impact on how FPS titles are molded today.
However, the recent free multiplayer beta demo of the new Doom reboot seems to have disappointed most fans of the franchise. Still, it does not mean that Romero and Carmack won't be able to deliver another great game with their own team.
Romero thinks that the Blackroom gameplay demo would be more than enough to show people what they have in mind about the game. There is no definite timeframe when Night Work Games will be able to finish the demo.
