The Chinese movie version of 2013's mega-hit Korean drama, "The Heirs," is nearing its completion. The Korean-Chinese joint venture is said to be currently in the last phase of completion after it passed the censorship requirements in January and is slated to be released across mainland China at the end of the year.
China's Enlight Pictures and Happy Era Media collaborated with the South Korean production company Hwa & Dam Pictures to produce a Chinese film version of the drama.
"We thought selling the copyright for remakes just makes it a storytelling resource," Hwa & Dam Pictures' CEO Yoon Ha Lim said in a statement obtained by Naver TV. "So, we started searching for something where we could focus on the storytelling itself, and decided on the co-production of a film."
The screenplay for the Chinese film adaptation is penned by screenwriter Jang Young Shil along with the drama's original screenwriter, Kim Eun Sook. The latter partook and supervised in the film's planning, in an effort to ensure its credibility, Soompi reported.
Earlier reports noted that the Chinese remake will grasp the college campus setting as opposed to the original drama series. The movie adaptation follows a young woman named Su En, who finds herself drawn into the elite world of Lin Tan.
Although many were pleased with the new revelation, some fans cannot help but fear that the remake may ruin the show's original story. The Korean drama, which aired on SBS from Oct. 9 to Dec. 12, 2013, for 20 episodes, starred Lee Min Hoo, Park Shin Hye and Kim Woo Bin.
It depicts the friendships, love lives, and rivalries of a group of rich, privileged, and elite high school students, led by Kim Tan (Lee), who is set to take control of their families' businesses. The other star-studded cast includes Choi Jin Hyuk as Kim Won, Kang Min Hyuk as Yoon Chan Young, Kim Ji Won as Rachel Yoo, Kang Ha Neul as Lee Hyo Shin, Krystal Jung as Lee Bo Na, Park Hyung Sik as Jo Myeong Su, Lim Ju-Eun as Jeon Hyeon Joo and among others.
