Acer and Starbreeze have teamed up to bring the StarVR Virtual Reality Head-Mounted Display for their customers amidst the booming VR industry today.
Big shot companies such as Valve, HTC, Sony and Oculus have the upper hand with their powerful VR headsets. However, Acer and Starbreeze wants to join in on the competition.
The StarVR has been demonstrated at the E3 2015 event but has been overshadowed by the Oculus Rift, the Sony PlayStation VR and the HTC Vive. However, the headset does have a wider field of vision at 210 degrees which is double compared to the Rift.
Consumer models of the new headset have not been planned yet. Starbreeze plans to introduce their technology at arcades most specifically the StarCade, PC Gamer reported. The said arcade is set to open in the next few months and is aimed at providing customers with immersive experiences without breaking their budget.
Starbreeze has also presented their first cinematic VR experience titled "Cockatoo Spritz" during the first week of the Cannes film festival. The VR content was directed by Stephane Barbato.
Acer is known for their laptops and smartphones which means that they will offer the advantage of their cutting-edge technology to build the StarVR headset. Their recent Predator series are even capable of supporting the new VR headsets.
Acer CEO Jason Chen said in a press release: " Acer is thrilled to join forces with Starbreeze in bringing the StarVR head-mounted display to the market. We are devoting R&D resources across multiple aspects of the VR ecosystem for a coherent and high-quality experience, while just last month Acer announced powerful desktops and notebooks fully-ready for StarVR."
Starbreeze Studios is known for rolling out exceptional video game titles such as Payday, Syndicate and The Chroicles of Riddick. They are even publishing the John Wick: The Impossible Task VR experience.
When StarVR is released, they will be showcasing the tech with Overkill's The Walking Dead VR experience. The popularity of the hit zombie survival series would hopefully propel the headset too.
Starbreeze and Acer's agreement to build the StarVR headset is just the first step to bringing more VR options to people. In the future, Acer laptops could be bundled with the new headsets as well.
