"Friends Furever" is the title of Android's latest ad that features cute animal BFFs people would not normally see together. The video, which was uploaded in YouTube on Feb. 5, Thursday, has since gone on to receive more than 6 million views as of this writing.
An elephant and a lamb playing, a dog and a dolphin swimming together, a cockatoo and a German shepherd eating pasta and a dog and a cat planning their escape from the house are a few of the unusual pairs viewers will see in the Android advertisement. The ad has been called "ridiculously, bestially cute" although technically incorrect by Chris Matyszczyk of CNet.
At the end of the video, viewers will read the message "Be together. Not the same." It reminds people of Android's fragmented OS, which is very much unlike Apple's single and unified iOS.
The tagline is also a subtle dig at the way Apple's "monoculture ecosystem" works, notes Philip Elmer-DeWitt of Fortune. But other than that an unnamed advertising professional told Fortune that the message will go over most viewers' heads. He has observed many of his clients are also guilty of using the same strategy as Google.
The industry insider explains that the public does not care about the OS. Most people he knows bought an Android phone because of the phone or the price.
Nevertheless, many viewers of the ad seemed to enjoy it, with one YouTube user saying it was the best Android commercial to date. But another viewer commented he still preferred Apple's iPhone running iOS over Android.
The ad, which was first shown on TV last week, was produced by Droga5, according to Campaign Brief. Droga5 is the winner of Adweek's 2015 Agency of the Year.
