The 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is over, bringing a lot of news about video games. AMD's biggest news this year was the announcement of the inclusions to its latest Radeon RX 400 lineup of video cards - the RX 460 and the RX 470.
During the E3 2016 conference, AMD's CEO Lisa Su unveiled the new video cards before posting the same information on the company's official website for those who were not present. Both the RX 460 and the RX 470 are aimed at lower levels of performance as compared to the RX 480.
The high-end RX 480 will run smooth AAA gaming at 1440p resolutions, in addition to bringing the virtual reality (VR) capability at a basic level price. On the other hand, the RX 470 is also meant to bring down higher leveled displays with its capacity for 1080p resolution.
With regard to the RX 460, AMD is aiming at the burgeoning eSports group, particularly the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). The video card will reportedly offer the most cost-effective performance, which will align with the MOBA group since it favors smother basic functionality over dramatic graphics.
While the public does not yet have information on the actual capabilities of the GPUs, there are reports with better understanding based on some leaked information from the manufacturer, according to Kotaku. AMD earlier on tested the RX 480 by comparing two units of the card with Crossfire technology against Nvidia's GTX 1080 GPU.
The two cards beat the GTX 1080 with the test being a bit biased in favor of AMD. However, leaked information from OC3D of the RX 480 benchmark results allegedly supports the capability of the two units as comparable to the GTX 1080. Analysts are concerned about how AMD's new cards will affect the market given that two RX 480 cards go for $400 against the GTX 1080's $700 price tag.
RX 470 and RX 460 still do not have any prices announced, but they are expected to retail below the RX 480's $200 price tag. It is reported that all of the AMD cards will go on sale on June 29.
