Ian Whyte, 44, played Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun or Wun Wun, a wilding giant who sacrificed himself to help Jon Snow (Kit Harington) regain control of Winterfell in "Game of Thrones" Season 6. He is one of the actors in the HBO series who look nothing like the character they play.
The Welsh actor and stuntman transformed into a gigantic Wun Wun with the help of prosthetics and computer effects. Whyte, who is a former professional basketball player, is actually 7 feet and 11 inches tall, Pop Sugar has learned.
"We made a huge foam suit, which he fits into and then the costume department wrapped him with animal pelts, all kinds of bones and things," VFX supervisor, Joe Bauer and Prosthetic supervisor Barrie Gower told Yahoo! TV. "He had quite an extensive silicone rubber prosthetic makeup on his head."
Before Whyte took on the role of the wilding giant, he initially played the role of the White Walker in Season 1 and 2 of the TV series. He also took over the role of Ser Gregor Clegane (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) in Season 2, after actor-stuntman Conan Stevens was not able to reprise the role at the time due to a scheduling clash.
Whyte has previously played several roles in "Game of Thrones," including the first giant in the wilding armed force of Mance Rayder (Ciarán Hinds), Dongo, who later died in the Battle of Castle Back toward the end of Season 4. A collage photo of Whyte portraying the four characters was then widely circulated on Facebook.
Whyte credits outside of HBO's "Game of Thrones" include the 2004 action-thriller "Alien vs. Predator," wherein he was cast as a Predator in the movie. He then doubled for actress Frances de la Tour in the role of the giant Madame Maxine in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005).
Whyte has also gone to play pivotal roles in "Clash of the Titans", "Outcast" and "Solomon Kane." In Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," he portrayed one of the Last Engineer aliens seen in the film.
