New reports are now claiming that Apple's OLED screens for the iPhone 8 will be supplied by Sharp and their trusted partner manufacturer Foxconn.
It has been expected that Apple will be using OLED screens for their future iPhones starting in 2017 and the first would be the iPhone 8. The iPhone 7 hasn't been officially revealed yet but many are already waiting for next year's smartphone instead of the former.
Apple has been traditionally using the LCD screens on their devices but the technology is slowly being outdated. The panels work fine for most situations but they tend to eat more battery outdoors as users would need to crank the brightness up for them to be able to see what's going on in their screens.
Foxconn chairman Terry Gou has already announced that they will be ready to ship the OLED panels to their customers before 2018 which suggests that Apple will be able to install the screens on their iPhone 8 by then, WCCFTech has learned. The company has also acquired Sharp which is known to make display panels.
OLED panels are preferred by more people simply because they tend to be brighter and more vivid with their color reproduction. Another known advantage of the panels is their power efficiency as the non-black pixels only consume power.
The "dark mode" theme that has been rumored to make an appearance on iPhone 7 is expected to be more popular when the iPhone 8 comes due to its OLED screen, Forbes reported. When the screen is mostly black, less battery power will be consumed since most parts of the screen will be turned off.
There are also rumors that the whole front of the 2017 iPhone will be consumed by the screen itself, ditching the home button. It is also rumored to feature a fingerprint sensor embedded in the display itself for faster authentication.
Apple is not expected to unveil the iPhone 8 this year as they haven't released the iPhone 7 yet. Early 2017 would be the best bet for more details regarding the OLED screens and whether Foxconn and Sharp will be the ones to supply the 2017 iPhone.
