Guillermo del Toro recently announced the new lead actor for the upcoming sequel of "Pacific Rim," and the co- creator proudly introduced John Boyega, known for his character in the previous "Star Wars" movie, as the newest cast member and lead character of the film.
According to Ecumenical News, del Toro was excited to be working with Boyega, and even stated that for him, Boyega is the only actor fit to portray the role and he is confident that he will give justice to the character. del Toro added that "The 'Pacific Rim' universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world' was our goal and I couldn't think of a better man for the job."
It was also stated that Boyega would play the role as the son of Stacker Pentecost in "Pacific Rim 2." During the first "Pacific Rim" movie, Idris Elba played the role of Stacker, a Marshal in the Pan Pacific Defense Corps; however, Elba's character died in the film. Although, some rumors indicate that Stacker still has some unfinished business that's crucial in the story flow of the film, there's a chance that Elba would be back to portray the role.
On other news, according to The Guardian, the upcoming "Pacific Rim" sequel would not be directed, nor the screen play be written, by del Toro, but instead, he would serve as one of the producers of the film.
The production of "Pacific Rim 2" faced a lot of troubles along the way, as it was originally released to start production in 2014 while the premiere date should be sometime in 2017; however, with all the changes in director and other factors, Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios had to scrap "Pacific Rim 2" off from their calendar and was just brought back in February with a different director on board.
Steven S DeKnight would replace del Toro as the director of "Pacific Rim 2." Reports stated that del Toro stepped down as the director of "Pacific Rim 2" because he is currently working on creating a new version of "Fantastic Voyage," which is based on the 1966 original.
Premiere date for "Pacific Rim 2" is yet to be announced.
