In the recent years, Google is known to be partnering up with smart phone manufacturers like LG and Huawei to produce the Google Nexus phone. But just recently, some sources revealed the tech-giant is planning to release their own handset. It has been said that the company will be taking over the upcoming phone's design, manufacturing and software.
According to CCS Analyst Ben Wood, Google is worried that Android has becoming fragmented over the years. He said that like Apple, Google wants to produce a more controlled platform. Though the company has been known for its internet software, it has been slowly making its way into the hardware market recently, The Telegraph reported.
Like other tech companies and phone manufacturers, Google was able to produce tablet computers, smart phones, laptop and other devices. Although the company's Chief Executive Sundar Pichai did not mention about making their own handset, he revealed in his interview that Google is planning to focus and invest more effort into phones by working with other manufacturers.
While one source may be confirming this move from Google has a high possibility of happening, another report thinks otherwise. It has been pinpointed that the rumored cause of Google wanting to manufacture their own phone is because they wanted to take greater control over Android. But the company has already achieved this objective, very effectively, through its Play Store, The Verge reported.
The report added the speculated reasons do not add up not only because Google has already taken control over Nexus phone through the Play Store, but also because Pichai's desire for greater design input is already being accommodated by partnering with several OEMs.
Although Rick Osterloh's recent joining in the company may mean something in terms of hardware development, a production of a new handset this year would not be happening that swiftly. Since these are just rumors, and the statements and current situation do not add up, Google may not be planning to release their own phone this year.
