"Game of Thrones" stars Lena Headey, Liam Cunningham and Maisie Williams rally support for the refugee crisis in Europe. Headey, Cunningham and Williams who play Davos Seaworth, Cersei Lannister and Arya Stark in HBO's massive fantasy drama traveled to Greece to urge European leaders to give more attention to the refugee crisis. The trio worked with the International Rescue Committee, a United States-based relief agency, and met with Afghans and Syrians who are stranded in refugee camps after escaping from their countries.
The refugees are under the EU-Turkey agreement which requires migrants from Greece to apply for asylum. The trouble, however, is the application process that is often long and drawn-out, PEOPLE reported.
The 42-year-old Headey may play the character people would love to hate in "Game of Thrones," but the actress is extending her heart to the refugees in real life. She was especially moved by the story of a Syrian woman who traveled alone with her three young kids so they could reunite with her husband who is in Germany. They have not seen her husband in one and a half years.
Headey understands that there are people in the refugee camps who are smart and hardworking, and that they want to go home and be with their neighbors and communities again. They want to continue their children's education but they are stranded. The Cersei Lannister actress calls for some better way to help the refugees.
With about 57,000 people stuck in Greece, Cunningham, 55, considers the situation a tidal wave, not just an earthquake. He wonders how government leaders want such to become the standard in Europe when it comes to dealing with the global crisis about refugees.
Williams, 19, is more concerned for the children, who have many hopes, dreams and potential. She cannot believe the refugees could be stuck in Europe for long.
As per government figures, there are about 3,331 refugees and migrants in Lesvos, Greece News.com.au reported. The refugees are fleeing war in Syria and other countries.
