Microsoft's newest Windows 10 upgrade notification will be a full-screen reminder for Windows 7/8 users to upgrade their operating system. Free upgrades from older versions of the Microsoft OS to Windows 10 will end after July 29. The latest notification comes at a time the software giant is updating its upgrade prompt so the process is less confusing for Microsoft customers running older OS versions.
Microsoft's new prompt first apologizes for interrupting Windows users. It then notes that the free upgrade offer for Windows 10 ends on July 29.
Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who receive the prompt will have four options. They can upgrade now, be reminded later, get notified three more times, or not receive another notification until the end of time, according to The Verge.
Not all Windows users will see the prompt. They include machines that are not compatible with Windows 10, have been installed with the newest OS already, or failed to upgrade to Microsoft Windows 10.
Microsoft also points out that Windows users who have the newest "Get Windows 10" app also will not see the whole screen prompt. People can also block the full-screen notification.
The Bill Gates co-founded company plans to charge $119 for Windows 10 upgrades starting on July 30. That is less than a month away. As a result, Microsoft is encouraging Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to get the free upgrade before then, so they can save more than a hundred-dollar bill to get the latest Microsoft OS for PCs.
Windows 10 was released almost a year ago on July 29, 2015. Microsoft reports it has been installed on over 350 million devices and has the highest rate of customer satisfaction of any Windows OS.
In related news, Apple announced an update and new name for its Mac OS at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last month. The new operating system for Macs is now known as macOS instead of Mac OS X, according to Macworld.
This year's macOS update will be called macOS Sierra. It is scheduled to be rolled out in fall 2016.
Apple announced that it is using the new name so it is undeviating from its other OS names including iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
