Important details of upcoming "Mafia 3" have been revealed by Game director Haden Blackman. He also said that the game will tackle on racial prejudice and identity, especially against African-Americans.
The story of the upcoming open-world video game will be set in the 1960s, and it will have a new protagonist, Lincoln Clay, according to Polygon. He is a war veteran and also a criminal, who is operating in the world of organized crime. He will also be skilled with different weapons and in the art of combat.
Blackman said that the game is all about organized crime, which has hierarchy, traditions, and a set of rules to follow. While the game studio is focusing more on the story, at the same time they wanted it to be relative to the reality of the time and the place. He added that there will be a lot of parts of the story where race will be referenced, since that is a part of who Lincoln is.
The protagonist's story will be set in a particular time and place where racism is a part of everyday life. While the game's story might be fiction, it will be lightly based on the Civil Rights-era of Louisiana. This will be a story of a world where signs of harsh racism are still remaining on public walls. Even the characters of the game will use the language of that era, including some of the worst racial slurs and insults.
The game director wanted the game to be as authentic to the era the story is set in. There will be a lot of gangsters in this game that are at war with each other. To make their language sound authentic, these characters will talk in racial slurs. While the main focus is Clay, the racial slurs will not always be directed to him, but to other races like the Italians, Irish, and others present in that era.
According to GamesRadar, the game will allow players to make their own choices to complete it. They can choose how to grow their own mafia empire, and take down the opponents at the same time. They can also try out different approaches in completing like go for a stealth approach, open fire at enemies right away, or they can also get their enemies join their side.
The game is being developed by Hanger 13, a new 2K studio that contains former staff from the original 2K Czech, and some industry veterans. It will be launched on October 7 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
