Director J.J. Abrams say Star War fans have to thank Apple's chief of design Jony Ive for that.
The new lightsaber features a cross guard and since the saber blade is a blazing red, the entire lightsaber closely resembles a burning cross.
The new lightsaber design was featured in a teaser trailer for the "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" movie posted on YouTube.

According to a report from the New Yorker, Abrams approached Ive, his friend, to suggest a design for a the new lightsaber. Ive, who heads the creative division in Apple, is known to have expressed his disdain about the design of the Toyota Echo and Toyota Camry, according to PCMag.
When asked about his suggestions for the lightsaber design, Ive said, "I thought it would be interesting if it were less precise, and just a little bit more spitty."
He said he wanted the new lightsaber to be "more analog and more primitive."
Since joining Apple, Ive has received numerous awards, including the Designer of the Year Award given by Design Museum. In 2004, the British Broadcasting Corporation named him the "Most Influential Person in British Culture."
Ive is well known for heading the industrial design team that created the iMac, iPod, iPhone and the iPad.
