Known for playing San Cai in the Taiwanese series "Meteor Garden," Barbie Hsu, 39, recently took to Twitter to weigh in on the territorial conflict between the Philippines and China. Apparently, this led to the suspension of her account in the microblogging site.
"Let there be peace between China and the Philippines," Hsu wrote. She added the words "I love you" written both in Chinese and Filipino.
On July 12, Tuesday, the United Nations (UN) Arbitral Tribunal issued the exclusive sovereign rights over the West Philippine Sea in the South China Sea to the Philippines. The decision also determined that the nine-dash line claimed by China is invalid.
"The Tribunal concluded that there was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within the sea areas falling within the 'nine-dash line," the Tribunal said in a statement obtained by Inquirer. Also stated in the statement is that the Tribunal have found that "none of the features claimed by China was capable of generating an exclusive economic zone."
The Tribunal stated in the statement that without delimiting a boundary, they found that it could declare that "certain sea areas are within the exclusive economic zone of the Philippines." They explained that "those areas are not overlapped by any possible entitlement of China."
Hsu has yet to release a statement about the suspension of her Twitter account after tweeting about China and the Philippines. On Nov. 16, 2010, the actress born in Taipei, Taiwan, married Chinese entrepreneur Wang Xiaofei in a civil ceremony Beijing, and on March 22, 2011, they had a wedding banquet on Hainan Island.
In 2001, Hsu rose to fame when she played the lead role in "Meteor Garden." Her fellow lead stars were the F4 members Jerry Yan, Ken Chu, Vic Zhou and Vannes Wu. In 2015, Wu served as a judge in "Asia's Got Talent" Season 1 with Anggun, David Foster and Melanie C, who was spotted wearing a sporty outfit while walking alone in London, Daily Mail reported.
"Meteor Garden" was based on the Japanese manga series "Hana Yori Dango" or "Boys Over Flowers." It was broadcast in several countries including Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.
