The TV series "The Americans" has announced that Season 6 will be the last of the show as fans know it; however, the cast and crew still celebrates as they win numerous Emmy nominations this year.
According to Master Herald, the TV show is a "three-arc story," with every arc occurring over two seasons. With "The Americans" Season 4 ending in June, this also means that two of the three arcs have already been shown. Thus, Season 5 and Season 6 are set to portray the last arc of the show, therefore concluding the TV series.
When interviewed about the last two season of the show, executive producer Joe Weisberg shared that they have "thought an incredible amount" about how they will stir the course of the remaining plot of "The Americans." In addition, fellow executive producer Joel Fields revealed that history gives them "lots of opportunities" within the plot to do what they want to do "in terms of where the story goes."
Meanwhile, according to Variety, the TV series has been on the "Emmy snub list" ever since the show premiered in 2013. However, it seems that the tables have turned for the cast and crew of the show, as they are now raking up nominations from major Emmy categories. They have been nominated for five nominations including Outstanding Drama Series. Actors Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys have individually been nominated for Outstanding Leads in a Drama Series, while the episode "Persona Non Grata" was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
Upon hearing the news, Fields shared that "it couldn't have been a better moment," as he was surrounded by his children and his wife. For Weisberg, it was an ordinary "father duty" day, as he was dropping off his daughter at a camp that day and was expecting to come home to no nominations. It was a pleasant surprise for both executive producers to receive the Emmy nominations they got.
"The Americans" Season 5, which is set in the Cold War era and centers around spies Elizabeth and Phillip Jennings, is set to premiere in the spring of 2017.
