Loyal viewers of the Fox TV series "Wayward Pines" has seen the fate of beloved characters in the Season 2 finale. One of the series' showrunners has recently shared his thoughts on how Season 2 ended and a potential storyline for Season 3.
Episode 10 of "Wayward Pines" Season 2 that aired on Wednesday, July 27, has shown how Theo (Jason Patric) and other characters decided to go into a deep sleep inside cryogenic pods, in a bid to save humanity from possible extinction and an impending Abbie attack. In the last few scenes of the season's finale episode titled "Bedtime Story," an interesting shot of an Abbie holding a human-like baby was presented. Executive producer and author Blake Crouch shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the said scene served as a sign that evolution is a continuous process.
Crouch explained that similar to humans, the Abbies are also capable of change. The baby that the Abbie held in the Season 2 finale refers to a change in the said species that made them appear more human. It also hinted of the Wayward Pines residents potentially waking up to a higher form of Abbies.
The Season 2 finale ending also teased of a potential new world that beloved characters may explore should the Fox series get a Season 3 renewal. The showrunner also shared some of his storyline ideas if the show gets renewed. Crouch even stated that viewers may see a mix of old and new characters.
He mentioned that the plot may potentially revolve around how the remaining humans would act knowing that they are the last of their species. The showrunner commented that it would also interesting to show mankind's final thoughts and emotions as they head into extinction.
Meanwhile, it is still unsure if "Wayward Pines" will be renewed for a third season. Ratings for the Fox series has been down, as compared to its first season, TV Series Finale reported. Season 1 posted an average rating of 1.1 among viewers aged 18 to 49. On the other hand, Season 2 has posted a 0.7 rating following its penultimate episode that aired on July 20. On the number of viewers, Season 2 only had 2.41 million viewers as compared to Season 1's 3.82 million viewers.
