Newbie actress Kim Joo Hyun, who won the lead female part in SBS's "My Sassy Girl" through an open audition, has stepped down to take on the drama's secondary role.
SBS's upcoming "My Sassy Girl" drama gained quite a bit of attention for its unique method of casting a female lead. Out of more than 1,800 non-celebrities and celebrities contestants vying for the female role, Kim was chosen through a final fan vote.
However, the actress will no longer be starring as the main female lead, according to Korean news outlet Sports Chosun, as cited by Soompi. It is said that Kim felt much burdened by her first main role. Hence, she ultimately decided to step down.
Kim has now been offered the role of a major supporting character, Jung Da Yeon, who will have an ultimate crush on Gyun Woo (Joo Woo). The report said that the actress will have to decide throughout the following days whether to completely leave the project or assume the drama's secondary role.
"As 'My Sassy Girl' is a huge project and collaboration between Chinese and Korean broadcast companies, former lead Kim Joo Hyun's casting did not go as planned as we decided after a long negotiation it didn't fit the situation," All Kpop quoted a representative from the drama as saying before a group of local reporters. "Though it's disappointing, I hope you see it as a good idea that will find a good candidate."
Instead, an offer is now out to "Please Come Back, Mister" actress, Oh Yeon-Seo, to headline SBS's "My Sassy Girl" in her place. Though nothing has been confirmed yet, it is said that the 29-year-old star is positively considering the offer.
If Oh accepts the offer, she will be portraying Princess Hyemyung, a trouble maker from a royal family. The upcoming drama is based on the 2001 global smash-hit film of the same, but will only be set in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) period.
With PD Oh Jin-Seok at the helm, SBS's "My Sassy Girl" will be a 100 percent pre-produced drama with the filming scheduled to begin later this month. Check out 2001's "My Sassy Girl" film starring Cha Tae-Hyun and Jun Ji-Hyun below:
