The growing popularity of Korean pop culture is proving excessively hot for China to handle, driving the country's General Office of Broadcasting and Television to limit the scope of K-pop artists' promotions and endorsements.
On Aug. 1, Monday, China's General Office of Broadcasting and Television have ordered local broadcasters to abide by a set of guidelines, where Korean idol groups and actors are now prohibited from having activities in any Chinese TV shows. They are also not allowed to hold any concerts with more than 10,000 fans.
This new prohibition is predicted to vigorously affect the Korean celebrities and K-pop idols scheduled endorsements, concerts, fan meeting event in China. The statewide ban is being credited to the heightening tension in the Sino-Korean relationship.
Korean entertainment agencies were compelled to cancel their artists' scheduled guest appearances in several Chinese TV shows, according to Korean news outlet Sports Chosun, as cited by The Kpop Herald. It is said that the scenes featuring the Hallyu stars are now being altered out.
"Large TV stations in China are taking actions to ban Hallyu stars from appearing on their reality show," an industry source told Sports Chosun. "Furthermore, contracts with the Hallyu stars are being nullified."
It is said that some Chinese TV stations and companies had already restricted the appearance of Korean superstars and is not intending to broadcast any Korean shows in the immediate period. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the said prohibition will only affect programs that have yet to be screened for broadcast.
In light of the enforcement of new guidelines, rumor has it that actress Yoo In-Na was kicked out of Hunan TV's "Love Weaves Through A Millennium 2." The 34-year-old actress was cast to play Pang Ziyi, a woman from the year 1936.
