Apple has released a minor update in iOS 9.3.4, a patch meant to address a vulnerability exposed by hacking group Pangu. It is expected to be the last update of the iOS 9 series.
Just when most were awaiting the eventual coming of the iOS 10 next month, Apple pulls out a surprise with the release of the iOS 9.3.4. It was an update no one saw coming though it technically thwarts any iOS 9.3.3 jailbreak out in the open.
Pangu released a semi-tethered iOS 9.3.3 jailbreak recently though the crack was marred by security issues. Users who tried the crack saw their handsets compromised, with breaches made on social media and financial accounts.
iOS 9.3.4 was released to address a certain issue, an application which could execute an arbitrary code with kernel privileges, Forbes reported.
Its release comes barely weeks after the final version of iOS 9.3.3 came out. Unlike previous Apple operating systems, iOS 9.3.4 didn’t undergo the usual betas before being disseminated.
Apple is urging all iPhone and iPad owners to apply the minor update, something carrying an important security update. It is available via the Software Update on the device settings menu or alternatively through iTunes, Apple Insider reported.
With the unexpected release, all iOS 9.3.3 jailbreaks will now be technically useless once Apple device oweners update to iOS 9.3.4. This also means that Pangu will be left with just one potential crack which would be for the iOS 10.
Pangu showcased three jailbreaks back in July 1 for the iOS 9.3.2, 9.3.3 and 10. None of the cracks officially came out although the iOS 9.3.3 jailbreak was seen as the closest despite being semi-tethered.
Assuming that iOS 9.3.4 is already the final update from Apple, the attention now shifts to September. iOS 10 is expected to be revealed alongside the iPhone 7 next month.
The next Apple mobile operating system is expected to come with new features such as Siri voice prompts and improvements to Messages, Maps and Photos.
For Pangu, iOS 10 could be the last jailbreaking opportunity they will have. The Apple jailbreaking community is keeping tabs with the latest crack now patched with the surprise release of the iOS 9.3.4.
