Microsoft is still unclear on their new Project Scorpio but they have announced that it could be the last Xbox as it would be upgradable throughout the years.
Another confusing statement from the executives at the Redmond-based company is that there will be no exclusive Project Scorpio titles but the VR games will only be compatible with the said console. It would mean that the Xbox One S will not have the power to run Microsoft's own VR device when it launches.
Xbox games marketing head Aaron Greenberg said that Project Scorpio will be the last Xbox console made in the traditional sense, Geek has learned. There will be newer Xbox systems but they could just be upgradable parts for the Project Scorpio as the company hopes to emulate how smartphones and PCs are upgraded.
In that case, the Project Scorpio could basically be just a modified PC with no other capabilities other than playing games and other compatible media. Some users even scoff at Microsoft's idea as people are better off buying a cheaper and more powerful PC instead which can do more than just gaming.
Microsoft has also clarified that there will be no exclusive titles for Project Scorpio but the VR games will only be compatible with the said console and not the Xbox One S, TechnoBuffalo reported. That would actually defeat the purpose of saying that there will be no Project Scorpio exclusives in the first place.
There has been no news yet as of how Microsoft will be integrating VR into their new console. No reports have tackled what the company will be producing for a competitor to the PlayStation VR which is set to be launched alongside the PlayStation Neo.
Sony and Microsoft have been competing for the top console but both seem to be just dishing out the same device throughout the years. The Project Scorpio is expected to be released in holiday 2017 at the earliest while Sony's PlayStation Neo is already slated for a release in September or October 2016 along with the PlayStation VR headset.
