A 51-year-old Chinese man in Melbourne was given by the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday 16 months prison term. The sentence, which includes being placed on the sex offender register for life, is for molesting girls between ages seven and 13.
Yi Yang, also known as Allan Yang, is a music teacher who plays the saxophone. But because of his reputation for molesting young girls while conducting private music lessons at his home, he is called Saxdragon, reported The Age.
Yang was a sessional teacher at the Scotch College from 2002 to 2009. He also operated the Melbourne Music Academy from his Kew home from 2015 to 2015. Yang’s social media accounts continue to use Saxdragon, Yang’s registered business name from 2003 through 2006.
Yang molested three of the victims at his house, while the fourth victim was a girl he was babysitting. He touched the victims under their clothes, hugged and kissed them on the forehead, cheek and mouth. Yang justified placing his hand on a nine-year-old girl’s stomach on the pretense that he was helping her practice breathing for playing saxophone.
Magistrate Jo Metcalf described Yang’s offenses as serious for gross violation of trust. She said the terrible, prolonged and furtive offenses which worsened over time, undermined the child’s sense of security and trust in the world. It also damaged their social and emotional development.
On Monday, he pleaded guilty to the charges of molesting four girls. After the sentencing, Yang – accompanied by an interpreter – appealed the sentence, allowed bail with no opposition and no conditions.
Although because of Yang’s loss of good reputation, despite his talent as a musician, the Chinese man would likely not teach music to young children again. But because the offense is serious, the court must send the message it would not tolerate sexual abuse of kids.
