At the rate the Hallyu drama starring Bae Suzy and Kim Woo Bin is see-sawing in the ratings game, it seems the drama, “Uncontrollably Fond,” could end up instead as “Uncontrollably Failed.”
Inquisitr noted that the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) started 2016 on a high note when it aired “Descendants of the Sun” over KBS 2TV and Chinese video platform iQiyi simultaneous in late February. The drama not only sustained its high viewership but even broke records in the two countries, making its lead actors – Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo – the most popular celebrities in the region now.
After the 16-episode drama ended in mid-April, there were speculation which Korean drama would equal or break the record of “Descendants of the Sun. In the middle of the year, “Doctors” and “Uncontrollably Fond” were pitted against each other, but after a few weeks, the webtoon “W” premiered and took the lead.
The first two dramas never retook back the top spot, however, “Uncontrollably Fond” showed a slight uptick in viewership after the show’s producers guested Ryu Seung-soo and Yoon Park for episodes 10 and 11. But at the rate the show is spiraling down, it runs the risk of crashing and burning, observers warned.
Analyzing the drama, Inquisitr pointed out it follows a successful general plot progression other Korean dramas have used. But there are apparent problems with execution of direction, with the show suspended in a cat-and-mouse limbo until the 10th episode, and its publicity of Bae Suzy as a great actress when she is not yet one. The website cited unbelievable acting when required some emotions or conditions.
“Uncontrollably Fond’s” biggest weakness, though, is sharing the timeslot with “W” which places the drama at the risk of becoming the biggest Hallyu failure of 2016.
