Any film by A-lister and Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway has good chances always of becoming a hit movie.
That could be the reason why a mysterious Chinese buyer acquired the distribution rights for the actress’s film "Colossal" at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film was the opening movie of TIFF over the weekend, reported Variety.
The identity of the buyer would eventually be known in the coming weeks when the buyer’s backers announce the investment in an American distributor. The movie, slated for showing in 2017, is about an alcoholic New Yorker, Gloria, who after her boyfriend, played by Dan Stevens, dumped her because she is a drunken mess, discovers her ability to control a creature in Seoul.
According to Mashable, while Hathaway had a sympathetic performance showcasing her quirky personality, the movie’s true villain is alcohol, the cause of her reckless behavior in the first half of the movie.
Nacho Vigalondo, who megged “Open Windows,” is the writer and director of “Colossal” which co-stars Austin Sotwall and Jason Sudeikis. Producers are Zev Foreman, Nahikari Ipinas, Russel Levine, Dominic Rustam and Shawn Williamson.
The distributorship deal, which is in the mid-seven figure range, was handled by CAA and Voltage Pictures.
The “Colossal” and “Jackie,” a biopic about former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, are few of the movies that closed deals at the TIFF after almost a week of screenings.
