Reality star Kim Kardashian is still shaken by the robbery incident in Paris on Sunday. Although she was not physically harmed, she has been emotionally damaged since she even thought the two intruders would rape her.
E! News cited its source who said Kim is still in a shock over the hold-up. The terrifying experience would need time for the mother of two – who was relieved that North West and Saint West were not with her during the incident – to get over it.
However, while many celebrities sympathized with Kim, others think she brought it unto herself because of her insufficient security and ostentatious display of her body and wealth over social media. Five days before the break-in, prankster Vitalii Sediuk attempted to grab Kim’s butt – which she had prominently displayed in the cover photo of Paper magazine in November 2014.
Steve Stanulis, a security specialist who once provided services to Kim, pointed out her posting of wearing a $5-million diamond ring is an invitation for someone to rob her.
Karl Lagerfeld, creative director of Chanel, agreed with Stanislus. He said, “I don’t understand why she was in a hotel with no security … If you are that famous and you put all your jewelry on [social media], you go to hotels where nobody can come near to the room,” quoted Reuters.
The exclusive Hotel de Pourtales, a boutique hotel frequented by celebrities and where Kim stayed, has minimal security. At the time of the robbery, Pascal Douvier, Kim’s bodyguard, was with her sisters clubbing. Pagesix noted that before the break-in, Kim posted an hour earlier on Snapchat the image of her 20-carat emerald-cut ring, one of the jewelry which the robbers specifically asked from her.
In a post on Instagram, Lagerfield, wrote, “You cannot display your wealth and then be surprised that some people want to share it with you.”
One of the Kardashians’ solutions is to beef up security. On her return to New York on Monday morning, more than 30 guards were protecting their house. E! News estimated that based on guard services billing of $60 to $125 an hour, the family would be paying almost $100,000 for 24-hour protection.
Security would help, but as Lagerfield said, not displaying your wealth is a wiser option. Would that mean less social media posts from the Kardashians displaying their wealth and bodies? How would this affect the viewership of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and the other reality shows featuring their family members?
