The South Korean hit film "200 Pounds Beauty" will be remade for the Vietnamese market. The rom-com film, which was released in Dec. 24, 2006, starred Kim Ah-Joong, Joo Jin-Mo, Sung Dong-Il, Kim Hyun-Sook and Lim Hyeon-Shik.
On Oct. 4, Tuesday, an unnamed source claimed that the publishing rights of "200 Pounds Beauty" were sold to a major company in Vietnam, The Kpop Herald has learned. The move is intended to spur production of its remake version.
In-depth details about the Vietnamese remake remains scarce. What is known is that a Vietnamese producer will most likely announce a casting call before the year ends. The movie is intended to hit the theaters at some point 2017.
"200 Pounds Beauty" was a critical and commercial success, becoming the third best-selling domestic film of 2009 with more than 6 million admissions across the nation. It has grossed $42,013,016 out of its $4 million budget.
The film was well-received among the audience in South Korea due to its solid storyline and Kim's vivid acting skills. Based on the Japanese manga "Kanna's Big Success!" the story of "200 Pounds Beauty" heavily revolve around an overweight ghost singer, Han-Na (Kim), who undergoes intensive plastic surgery to become a pop sensation.
The remake of "200 Pounds Beauty" has been getting attention at home and abroad, as it could inherit the immense success of "Sweet 20," a Vietnamese version of the 2014 South Korean hit film "Miss Granny." The film, which was released in Vietnam on Dec. 11, 2015, became the highest grossing Vietnamese film at the local box office.
"Miss Granny" follows a 70-year-old grandma, Oh Mal-Soon (Na Moon-Hee), who mystically ends up in the body of her 20-year-old self (Shim Eun-Kyung) after having her picture taken at a mysterious photo studio. Seeking to enjoy her second chance, she goes out to do what she wants and live her new life without regrets.
"Miss Granny" has also been remade for the Chinese and Japanese market under the title of "20 Once Again" and "Ayashii Kanojo" (Suspicious Girl), respectively, Yonhap News Agency reported. A Thai remake of the said comedy film is scheduled for release later this year, while its Indonesian version is intended to hit the local theaters in 2017.
