Up to this time, "Sherlock" has not been renewed for another season. Although things have been kept under wraps, lead star Benedict Cumberbatch seemed to shed some light on the fate of the show following "Sherlock" Season 4.
Cumberbatch, who plays the obsessive private detective in the hit BBC series, recently wrapped up filming "Sherlock" Season 4. However, his fans got worried after his latest remark seemed to point out that Season 4 will be the show's last.
"It might be the end of an era," Cumberbatch told British GQ. "It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately."
Although Cumberbatch did not address clearly what he is trying to say about the British series, his answers to the interview hinted so much that "Sherlock" Season 4 may be the end of the show after four years of airing. When asked about what he feels about "Sherlock," Cumberbatch was clear when he admitted that he would love to revisit the show.
He added that the idea of not playing the role of "Sherlock" is even bothering. He promised that he will never get tired of reprising his role along with Martin Freeman, who plays Doctor Watson.
The speculation about "Sherlock" Season 4 is not new at all. In fact, Cumberbatch had addressed the same rumors at the San Diego Comic Con in July, where he told everyone that the fate of the show is still uncertain, and that he is wishing to come back because he had so much fun doing the show.
Cumberbatch admitted that there are many things to consider for the show to go on for another season. He assured, no decision has been made yet, Collider quoted him as saying.
Showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss seemed to agree with Cumberbatch that the end is near for the show when they disclosed that they are taking the show one season at a time. The actor added that even the showrunners are being flexible to whatever decision will come after "Sherlock" Season 4.
"Sherlock" new season is slated to be seen early in 2017, where fans could witness Freeman and Amanda Abbington's (MaryMorstan) characters transform as parents for the first time. Season 4 has three episodes that are deemed as the most shocking and surprising season yet.
