The fad over the erotic movie "Fifty Shades Of Grey" has passed as Will Smith's "Focus" topped this weekend's box office with a strong US$19.1 million.
The con man film is the top grosser for this week and the movie "Kingsman: The Secret Service" comes in second while "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water" ranks third overthrowing "Fifty Shades of Grey" that finished fourth this week after landing the first spot in its second week.
According to Chron, "Focus" was written and directed by the duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who's works include the romantic comedy film "Crazy, Stupid, Love". Smith teamed up with "The Wolf of Wall Street" actress Margot Robbie and the film is expected to gross even more in the coming weeks.
Despite the strong opening of Smith's new film, Jeff Goldstein, the head of distribution for Warner Bros., said in a statement that there was still an evident drop of US$1-2 million from the expected amount but the weather is to be accounted for regarding this downside. He noted that the weather in the South and Midwest made it impossible for other people to watch the film.
Also in other reports, the R-rated film appealed to adults older than 25 years old as 88 percent of those who watched it fell in this category. This shows that Smith's popularity among the older generation remains strong but his ability to appeal younger generations and moviegoers is a bit frail.
Other films such as Oscar-award winning flicks were also seen nationwide over the weekend. Films such as "Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)", "Still Alice", "And American Sniper" added more areas where the movies are showing and earned a few more millions to the movies' gross.
In a report by Huffington Post, it is projected that "Focus" will come out stronger this week and the final figures will be released anytime soon.
