"Sherlock" Season 4 is slated to premiere next year, but early rumors tried to put an end to the BBC modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved masterpiece. Showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have both slammed the rumors.
In Benedict Cumberbatch's latest interview, fans of the popular BBC series were alarmed when they thought that the actor implied that "Sherlock" Season 4 will be its final season. Cumberbatch's statement came after he finished the filming for the upcoming season.
"It might be the end of an era," Cumberbatch told British GQ about how he felt when the series wrapped up in its production. "It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately. We never say never on the show."
In the midst of "Sherlock" Season 4 speculations, Moffat debunked the rumors by saying that the rumors are baseless. He explained that the "Doctor Strange" actor's words were taken in a wrong context. The co-producer added that although it may take some time for Cumberbatch to play his role again, the actor is not suggesting that he is quitting the show.
Mark Gatiss, who plays Mycroft and also the show's co-creator, emphasized in his most recent interview with BBC Radio 5 that he has no idea whether Season 4 will be "Sherlock's" final season. He also stressed that he has no knowledge if Cumberbatch is returning to reprise his role when Season 5 will be ordered because he is too much preoccupied with new projects this time.
During the interview, Gatiss made it clear that the rumors about "Sherlock" Season 4 are not true at all. Cumberbatch may be busy at the moment, but he will always be ready to play the infamous detective role. The co-creator reiterated that there will be no "Sherlock" without Cumberbatch or even Martin Freeman, who plays Watson, according to CarterMatt.
Meanwhile, there are speculations that BBC and Moffat are in the talks for a possible Season 5. Altough the co-creators have earlier commented that they are taking each season at a time at the San Diego Comic Con in August, Gratiss admitted that it is hard to let go the show at this time.
"Sherlock" Season 4, which is deemed as the most shocking and surprising season will have three episodes. As for Season 5, the entire cast and the productions are set to go for another season. Check out the official trailer of the upcoming season:
