"Spider-Man" star Tobey Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer have split up after nine years of marriage. The actor and the jewelry designer announced their separation in a joint statement released on Oct. 18, Tuesday.
"After much soul searching and consideration we have made the decision to separate as a couple," the couple said in a joint statement obtained by People. "As devoted parents, our first priority remains raising our children together with enduring love, respect and friendship."
Maguire, 41, and Meyer, 39 met in 2003 and exchanged their vows four years later in a beautiful sunset ceremony in Hawaii in the presence of family and friends, including Maguire's BFF Leonardo DiCaprio. The couple share two children; a nine-year-old daughter named Ruby and a 7-year-old son named Otis.
Meyer and the "Spider-Man" star's decision to go their separate ways may come as a surprise to fans but a source close to the couple told Entertainment Tonight that the "marriage fell apart over the course of time." The insider added that the split did not involve any drama and the separation was not the result of anything specific but because the couple had drifted apart and realized that they had both changed as individuals.
The source also pointed out that the couple decided to part ways amicably for the sake of their kids, who remain their top priority. The insider noted that Maguire and Meyer, who is the daughter of CAA co-founder and NBC Universal vice chairman Ron Meyer, are only concerned about Ruby and Otis and want to ensure that their separation does n Maguot affect the lives of their children.
Maguire has already started enjoying life as a single man. The actor has reportedly been hitting the clubs and partying with DiCaprio over the last few months.
