"It's all up in the air," Holland told Variety during the New York Film Festival premiere of "The Lost City of Z" where he also appeared. "I believe some sort of deal is in the mix, but I'm unclear as to what that deal is."

In 2015, Marvel and Sony revealed Spider-Man would join Marvel Cinematic Universe and could appear in other Marvel films while its solo films by Sony will also let other MCU characters to appear. This year's "Captain America: Civil War" debuted Holland's Spider-Man as the newest star of MCU.

Holland's character was welcomed by superhero fans worldwide. Hence, many are surprised why Spider-Man's presence in "Avengers: Infinity War" which will debut on May 4, 2018 remains unconfirmed.

Many see Spidey as the world's most marketable superhero and assume Marvel feels the same. Such would make the web-spinner's appearance in the next "Avengers" movie given. However, Sony has the rights to films that feature Spider-Man, so Marvel has to make negotiations with the company if it wants the participation of the hero in its films.

As for Spidey's solo films, the original deal of Marvel with Sony involved a Spider-Man trilogy with two-year intervals. If that is the case, then the sequels of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" will come in 2019 and 2021.

While Marvel has announced three movie releases for each year of 2017, 2018 and 2020, it has only mentioned two films for 2019. "Captain Marvel" will be released on March 8, 2019 and an untitled fourth "Avengers" film will come out on May 3, 2019. The third film could be that of "Spider-Man" which will likely be on Nov. 2019.

Before anything else, Spidey will still have to battle against Vulture, Tinkerer and other foes on July 7, 2017 in "Spider-Man: Homecoming." The said villains will pose a challenge to the "friendly neighborhood" hero, IGN quoted Marvel saying during the San Diego Comic-Con in July.
