South Korea's Kpop industry is dominated by three big entertainment companies - YG, JYP, and SM. The three entertainment labels have produced successful idol groups that ruled over the music charts in the country.
Being a leader of an idol group is a big responsibility. It entails leading a pack of people to success. Below is how the top three agencies choose the leaders of their respective idol groups.
YG - Middle member
YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk once explained in a reality show that he choose the middle age members to be the leaders of the groups. Probably taking hint from siblings, most often than not, the middle child is the most problematic with the tendency to rebel from the group. He said that giving a big task to middle members will make them more responsible, but will still respect the older members of the group.
Moreover, YG usually chooses the member with strong personality and charisma. This is proven in BIGBANG, 2NE1, and iKON. Song Mino was supposed to be the leader of Winner, but was changed to Kang Seungyeon.
JYP - Seniority
JYP has a different approach in choosing the leaders of its idol groups. Park Jinyoung made sure to establish close relationships with his artists. The trainees that have trained under the label the longest time end up the leaders of the groups. This is true with Wonder Girls' Sunye, 2AM's Jo Kwon, MissA's Min, and TWICE's Jihyo. The idols trained under JYP for at least nine years before their debut.
SM - Oldest member
SM Entertainment's secret in choosing the leader is simple. The oldest member ends up being the leaders of their groups. Super Junior's Lee Teuk, SHINee's Onew, Girl's Generation's Taeyeon, and Red Velvet's Irene were the oldest members of the groups.
In the end, no matter who became the leader, all groups became successful.
