It seems that Sylvester Stallone will have to hatch an escape plan again. Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films has greenlighted a sequel of "Escape Plan" and the actor is prepared to reprise his role of Ray Breslin in it.
According to Deadline, EFO co-founders Randall Emmett and George Furla have decided to go ahead with the sequel of the original 2013 hit, despite the lukewarm response from the audience. While the movie lapped up $137.3 million worldwide, it only earned just over $24 million in the United States.
Miles Chapman, the writer who scripted the original movie, has been roped in to work on the script. Ted Fox, Mark Stewart, Barry Brooker and Stan Wertlieb will executive produce the project with Robert Jones and Wayne Marc Godfrey of The Fyzz Facility.
Stallone's character was shown as one of the world's leading authorities on structural security who agrees to try his hand at escaping a top-secret facility called The Tomb. When he learns that this is all a ruse to wrongly imprison him, he joins hands with an inmate, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, to break out.
It is still not sure whether Schwarzenegger will join the sequel or not. Although plot details of the sequel are still unknown, Stallone is expected to take a supporting role this time. It seems that the 70-year-old actor will be shown helping another character to break free in the upcoming sequel.
Since "Escape Plan" was a huge hit in China with gross earnings of $40.9 million, the sequel is expected to have a major Chinese star. It is being claimed that Stallone is likely to bring the huge Chinese box-office star Jackie Chan for the upcoming sequel.
Stallone reportedly wanted to work alongside Chan since a long time and even almost brought the Chinese actor in one of the "Expendables" franchise. However, the two action stars have not worked together yet.
"Escape Plan 2" will start shooting in March in Ohio and China, but no release date has been pegged yet. The pre-production will begin in January 2017 and the shooting is expected to start a couple of months later.
In other news, "Rambo" sequel has been announced, but it will not see Stallone return as the action hero. A younger actor will inhabit the famous role, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
