Is The CW sacking "Reign" after Season 4? That's the big question circulating among fans of the historical drama. It's been rumored that "Reign" Season 4 will see the last of Queen Mary's and her court.
When we reunite with Queen Mary (Adelaide Kane) in "Reign" Season 4, she has returned to her home country of Scotland and fighting for its freedom and future. Following the death of her husband, King Francis (Toby Regbo), and a series of failed marriage arrangements, Mary is still left a widow and vulnerable of being replaced, especially since she's still without an heir. But despite these circumstances, Mary will be stronger than ever, and even more independent.
Speaking of lovers, Mary will have new ones in "Reign" Season 4. TVLine reported that the show will introduce a new character named Lord Darnley, who is described as a nobleman with a blood-claim to the English throne. Lord Darnley has a "wildly ambitious mother whose love hinges entirely on his ability to secure a crown," who is kind of similar to Francis' mother, Catherine de Medici. He hopes to wed Mary and their union is seen as a means to take down incumbent Queen Elizabeth of England.
Also in the running to win Mary's hand at marriage is a "warm-hearted bad boy" named Bothwell. Although he is depicted as someone who is deeply in love with Mary, history tells us that this character was accused of murdering someone very close to Mary. Perhaps, he may have his own secrets on the show.
But is the addition of new affairs, relationships and controversies enough to save the show from getting sacked? "Reign" Season 3 took a dip in ratings compared to its predecessors. During its previous season, "Reign" only scored a .2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, gathering only 923,000 total viewers tuned in for the Friday timeslot, Cinema Blend reported. Ratings began to slide when the show killed off its major character - Regbo's King Francis - leaving Kane's Mary a distraught widow bent on protecting Scotland from Protestant usurpers.
Moreover, the last few episodes of "Reign" Season 3 saw the exit of another fan favorite, Torrance Coombs's Bash, as well as the death of Anna Popplewell's Lola. Nevertheless, there's still a lot in store for Mary, which fans can certainly look forward to in "Reign" Season 4 that will premiere next year.
