The New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves could work out a deal that would see them swap point guards Derrick Rose and Ricky Rubio.
It could only be a matter of time before the Timberwolves trade Ricky Rubio. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, the Timberwolves are reportedly resisting trade overtures for Ricky Rubio, waiting for Kris Dunn to fully develop as the team's top point guard.
"There is still time until the 2016 NBA draft's fifth overall selection, Kris Dunn, takes over as the Minnesota Timberwolves' point guard - which is why the franchise is still resisting trade overtures for Ricky Rubio, league sources told The Vertical," Woj wrote.
It is unclear how serious the Wolves are about shopping Rubio, but while coach Tom Thibodeau has designated him on a starting role, it would behoove the team to deal him elsewhere to give way on the development of Dunn.
Maxwell Ogden of the Daily Knicks, a fan site hosted by Sports Illustrated, explored a potential trade for the Timberwolves and Rubio. According to Ogden, Thibs' loyalty to New York Knicks star point guard Derrick Rose could lead Minnesota to consider a "Rose-for-Rubio swap" before the deadline.
"Thibodeau's loyalty to Derrick Rose could create the potential for a Rose-for-Rubio swap at some point in 2016-17. That'd be a dangerous move for the Knicks, however, as Rose is one of the only players on the roster who can consistently create penetration," Ogden wrote.
"Rubio is one of the most well-rounded players in the NBA, however, and combines his defensive proficiency with a cost-efficient contract at $42.3 million through 2018-19."
Rose is playing in the final year of his contract, which could make him a one-year rental for the Timberwolves. But Rose could be a perfect mentor for the Wolves' pack of young guards, and his experience would also be valuable for the team's growth moving forward.
On the other hand, the Knicks adding Rubio gives them a long-term point guard who can fit well in Jeff Hornacek's fast-paced offense. Rubio, who is averaging 7.4 points and 7.4 assists a game this season, isn't much of a scorer, but his ability to easily find open teammates makes him a perfect acquisition for the Knicks.
The Timberwolves seem keen in keeping hold of Rubio after giving him a starting role this season. But if Dunn improves faster than expected, it is possible Rubio becomes available, which the Knicks should take advantage of.
