"Kim Bok Joo getting mad at Jung Joon Hyung's teasing affection, but also getting closer to him is an important theme in the drama," the production staff told Soompi. "Many interesting things will happen to the couple as we go forward, so please stay tuned."
Helmed by Oh Hyung-Jong, "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo" follows a naturally gifted weightlifter, Kim Bok-Joo, whose whole life has revolved around weightlifting. However, after meeting the sweet and handsome obesity doctor, Jung Jae-Yi (Lee Jae-Yoon), the heroine finds herself wondering whether he would ever see her as a woman.
"Our drama is an essay about the first love of a 21-year-old athlete called Bok-Joo whose entire life has revolved around weightlifting," Yonhap News Agency quoted screenwriter Yang Hee-Seung as saying during a press conference at MBC headquarters. "It's a healthy youth drama about the fierce self-challenges of sport university students, their real concerns, and growing pains."
Writer Yang goes ahead to say that individuals have a one-sided perspective of weightlifting as a sport for female athletes. She added, "Paradoxically speaking, even women who do such physically demanding sports must experience love and I thought that their stories of first love might have a different quality."
The MBC coming-of-age drama, which also stars Kyung Soo-Jin, Lee Joo-Young, Cho Hye-Jung and Kang Ki-Young, premiered on Nov. 16 with nationwide ratings of 4.1 percent. Should viewership surpass 10 percent, the main stars promised to hold a special event for their fans.
