The WWE swerved the world at the Survivor Series when Bill Goldberg defeated Brock Lesnar in a squash match. The latest rumors have revealed the reason why Goldberg went over Lesnar in a surprising time of one minute and 26 seconds.
The battle between Goldberg and Lesnar at Survivor Series was built up by the WWE for months. However, it was an underwhelming but shocking match wherein The Beast lost in less than two minutes against his rival.
The 49-year-old WCW legend was picked up by Lesnar to start the match but it had no effect. He pushed off the former UFC and WWE champion before delivering a huge spear. Goldberg hit another spear for good measure and followed it up with The Jackhammer for the win.
It left the crowd stunned as the invincibility of Lesnar that the WWE built up for three years was destroyed by Goldberg. Nevertheless, the WWE got what it wants and it is for people to talk about the event.
Survivor Series and Goldberg was trending on social media which makes WWE Chairman Vince McMahon very happy. However, what is the reason why the WWE decided to let Goldberg squash Lesnar on Sunday in Toronto?
Dave Meltzer said in the latest episode of The Wrestling Observer Radio (subscription required) that the finish of the match was finalized last week. Only the people in McMahon's inner circle was given knowledge about the plan.
Goldberg has signed a new deal with the WWE and he is expected to work the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 33 next year. Lesnar also reportedly pushed for his rival to go over him because the WWE will make a lot of money out of it.
There were several rumors saying that Goldberg's shoulder injury was the reason why it happened. However, the WWE finalized the finish once the former WCW superstar decided to stay with the WWE. The squash match was decided because they want the fans to get behind Goldberg.
According to The Inquisitr, the squash match will lead to a WrestleMania 33 rematch between Goldberg and Lesnar. Goldberg is entering the 2017 Royal Rumble which means The Beast might appear in the match and cost him an opportunity to win the event.
It will then set up their rematch at WrestleMania 33 just like what happened back in 2004. Nevertheless, the WWE got what they wanted and it seems that the Grandest Stage of Them All is quickly taking shape heading into 2017.
