"The Last of Us 2" was recently announced during this year's Playstation Experience event, along with a first teaser trailer and the confirmation that Ellie would be the playable character instead of Joel. Creative Director Neil Druckmann has now announced that his co-writer is none other than "Westworld" veteran Halley Gross.
Druckmann posted the announcement on Twitter, stating "Halley's my kickass co-writer. Can't wait to share more of the story with y'all. Spoiler alert: it's intense."
Gross is credited with penning the script for the episodes "Tromp L'Oeil" which revealed Bernard's (Jeffrey Wright) true nature and "The Adversary," in which Bernard and Elsie (Shannon Woodward) discover someone has been smuggling data out of the park. According to a report from GameRant she also served as a story editor for the episodes "Chestnut" and "The Stray."
"Westworld" is based on a 1973 film but the new HBO series also took inspirations from video games such as the "Grand Theft Auto" and "Bioshock" series. It is stated that "The Last of Us 2" may turn the tables around and could take cues from "Westworld" and other television shows or films, particularly other post-apocalyptic series.
Druckmann, who wrote the story for the first game and shares the writing duties for the second game, explained that the sequel would serve as a complementary piece to the first title, IGN reported. He also stated that while the first game's theme was about love the sequel would focus on the theme of hate.
"The Last of Us 2" is still in early development and no official release date has yet been announced.
The game has been rumoured to launch between 2018 and 2021 but the developers have not yet confirmed this. Naughty Dog did unveil another game, "Uncharted: The Lost Legacy," which will release for the PS4 in 2017 and will focus on Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross instead of Nathan Drake.
