2NE1's disbandment came as a shock to the K-Pop girl group's fans across the globe. Now, it appears as though Park Bom had something to do with the band's breakup.
On Nov. 25, YG Entertainment officially confirmed via a statement obtained by All KPop that the iconic K-pop group will be breaking up. Although fans saw the group's disbandment coming for a long time, they found it difficult to accept the sad reality when the official announcement was made.
The four-girl group was on a hiatus since 2014 while the bandmembers pursued careers as solo artists before the disbandment was officially declared. YG Entertainment confirmed that it will be renewing the contracts of Dara and CL as solo artists. However, Park's contract will not be getting a new contract and Minzy is no longer a part of the group after her departure in April.
Reports claim that Park's drug scandal is one of the reasons behind 2NE1's disbandment. In 2014, Park took the internet by storm after reports surfaced that the singer was caught smuggling drugs into Korea in 2010. The idol was reportedly carrying 82 pills of amphetamines from the Unites States when she was caught at Seoul's Incheon International Airport.
The case was later dropped by prosecutors but many believe that the scandal was one of the main reasons for the group's split. There is also a lot of conjecture that Minzy's exit contributed to the group's disbandment.
"2NE1's exclusive contract expired in May 2016, and with Minzy leaving 2NE1, we have come to the decision to officially disband after extensive discussion with the remaining members," Soompi quoted the agency as saying in its announcement. "Rather than waiting an unknown amount of time for 2NE1's next promotions, we have decided to focus on the members' solo activities."
