A brand new game based on the "Conan the Barbarian" stories is set to launch early next year, titled "Conan Exiles." The developers have now released a brand new feature video showcasing some of the key mechanics such as building shelter, capturing thralls and gaining the favor of the gods.
The trailer has a strong emphasis on survival and the developers drive this point from the very beginning of the game, where the player character is saved from crucifixion. The player can then begin their journey throughout the world of Hyborea but must build, capture and worship in order to survive.
Building mechanics appear to be similar in design to "Minecraft," as the trailer shows the player assembling a structure tile by tile. Furniture and other items can then be crafted. When a forge is crafted the player can also gather special blacksmiths to forge weapons the character would normally not get.
Even the environment is a dangerous aspect, Dual Shockers reported. In the trailer the developers reveal there will be constant sandstorms and the player can survive by either building shelter or crafting a special mask.
Gaining the favor of the gods is also given importance. Religion is stated to be an integral part of survival and when a god favors the player they will send their avatar to help destroy their enemies.
Capturing thralls is also given emphasis. By capturing an enemy they can then be turned into slaves but the video explains that the slave's mind and will must still be broken. This can be done by forcing them on the "Wheel of Pain." Once broken, they can be trained to defend the player's fort, become smiths or even dance to relieve the hero of insanity.
According to Game Rant, the concept of having thralls may turn out controversial given the sensitive nature of slavery and female abuse. There is even a section shown in the trailer where the player must drag the captured thrall by the feet and this may become a point of conflict for others.
It should be noted that the original Robert E. Howard stories regarding "Conan the Barbarian" also shared this type of controversial content as well as excessive gore and violence. The world of Conan was always depicted as a harsh, violent world and the developers appear to be emulating this as faithfully as possible.
