The Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) spin-off movie is moving forward and it will reunite Robbie with "Suicide Squad" director David Ayer. The film won't focus solely on Harley Quinn, however, as it will feature other female DC villains like Catwoman and Poison Ivy and is now titled "Gotham City Sirens."
Ayer has been confirmed to both direct and produce the film. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Robbie is also serving as a producer thanks to an exclusive partnership between her production company and Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film will be penned by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. She is known for writing the script for the upcoming "Tomb Raider" reboot film starring Alicia Vikander and "Sherlock Holmes 3," which is also in development under Warner Bros. Pictures.
Geoff Johns and Jon Berg, who are in charge of overseeing the DCEU for Warner Bros. Pictures, will also serve as producers. Johns, in particular, is also known for being the creative director of the DC comic books since the 2011 "New 52" reboot took place.
The film will be based on the 2009 "Sirens" comic books, which is a fairly new entry in the DC universe. The books focus on the female villains from Batman's rogue gallery such as Poison Ivy, who uses plants and toxins, and Catwoman who is known for being a buglar and at times Batman's lover.
Ayer did express interest back in May about working again with Robbie, The Verge reported. Although "Suicide Squad" received mixed reviews critics and fans alike praised Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn and the movie managed to earn over $700 Million worldwide.
This is not the only spin-off film in development as it is also confirmed that a "Deadshot" movie is moving forward. The popular character was played by Will Smith in "Suicide Squad" and is expected to reprise his role in the spin-off title.
Smith and Ayer are currently working together on a separate project for Netflix titled "Bright." The project is labelled as a fantasy thriller and will also star actor Joel Edgerton. It will premiere in Spring 2017.
No release date has yet been announced for either the "Deadshot" film or "Gotham City Sirens."
