Ever since "Jurassic Park" came out in 1993, four dinosaur-centric films have hit the silver screen. From the original "Jurassic Park" trilogy, the 2015 hit "Jurassic World" gave a more advanced take to the original theme park concept. The fifth film "Jurassic World 2" is said to be a lot different than its predecessors.
Director J.A. Bayona recently teased that "Jurassic World 2" will be different from the first "Jurassic World" film, hinting that it is going to be darker.
"I think it's very interesting where the new movie is heading. It's so different from the other films, it talks a lot about the moment we live in right now," Bayona tells Coming Soon. "It's darker... but at the same time it's going to be a lot of fun. It's a blockbuster, you have Chris Pratt, it's a great adventure, but it's very interesting the way the film is darker than the other ones."
While the previous "Jurassic" films featured gruesome, carnivorous dinosaurs, the story of the film was never dark. It usually involves a family unit in a theme-park-gone-wrong and each member works together to survive.
Although Bayona did not go into the details of "Jurassic World 2," there are speculations that the next film would delve deeper into the weaponization of the dinosaurs. This concept was touched upon in "Jurassic World," particularly in the scene where Chris Pratt's character, Owen, is training four Velociraptors inside a pit.
"I feel like the idea that this isn't always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment," scriptwriter Colin Trevorrow said about the future of the "Jurassic World" franchise, as quoted by Cinema Blend.
There is also a possibility that the "Jurassic World 2" plot will introduce laboratories other than InGen that will specialize in dinosaur DNA and reproducing them. In the first film, Dr. Wu said that InGen will not always be the only ones that can make a dinosaur, which hints that there are probably other dinosaur-making labs out there.
"Jurassic World 2" will be out in theaters on June 22, 2018.
